Hair transplantation is a life-changing event that permanently restores confidence. However, its success does not end at the clinic’s exit gate. The best results are essential in post-operative care, and avoiding these common mistakes can make a difference. The following are some common mistakes that most frequently occur post-transplantation.
Touching or Scratching the Transplanted Area
Some degree of irritation, itching, or tenderness of the scalp will be present after the surgery. However, in this area, touching, scratching, or handling can further damage the delicate grafts and interfere with the engraftment process. It is advisable not to touch your scalp, especially in the first few days of the post-operative period when your grafts are settling.
2. Poor Follow-Up Post-Operation
Your surgeon will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions on how to wash your hair, any medications to take, and what to avoid. Not following these instructions could cause infection, poor healing, and poor graft survival. Take a minute to go through them carefully and follow each one.
One of the common mistakes is washing your hair too quickly once the procedure is completed. You may want to clean your scalp but wait for a few days when your surgeon allows you to, as early washing of hair after the procedure can dislodge the grafts and postpone the healing process.
4. Exposure of Scalp to Sunlight
Direct sunlight for newly transplanted hair follicles may be injurious, especially during the first few weeks following the surgery. The risk for sunburn can be a determining factor in scarring the grafts or affecting the results. Wearing a hat is recommended or avoiding peak hours of sunlight in general.
5. Vigorous Activity
While this is important, too much exercise and activities that lead to heavy perspiration may hinder recovery. Excessive sweating and heavy exercise can increase the risk of infection and graft damage resulting from straining of the scalp. For at least the first couple of weeks following your surgery, avoid heavy activities.
6. The Use of Harsh Hair Products
First of all, hair products like gels, sprays, and strong shampoo are not recommended during the first stages of recovery. Such products may irritate the scalp further and probably delay the process of healing. On the other hand, try using light products recommended by a doctor.
Having avoided these common mistakes and followed your surgeon’s advice closely, you will be guaranteed the best results from your hair transplant and a very smooth recovery.
